Dozens of Israelis marched together down New York's 5th Avenue yesterday as part of New York's Pride. For the first time ever, the Israel Gay Youth Organization (IGY) took part in the parade as a join venture with the Israeli Consulate.
The Israel Gay Youth Organization (IGY) was established in 2002 and has since grown into one of the largest and most widespread LGBT organizations in Israel, with activities in 20 cities and towns across the country – from Kiryat Shmona in the north to Dimona in the South. More than 1,500 young people regularly attend these activities.
Indeed, since the establishment of the organization, there has been a major change in the daily life of Israeli youth that categorize themselves as LGBT. A substantial percentage of LGBT or questioning youth, from all areas of Israel, are now able to find a supportive atmosphere where IGY activities take place.
IGY organizes activities for gay youth between the ages of 15-18 and 18-23. These activities are based on social group meetings, support group meetings, and topic group meetings.
IGY seeks to provide a safe and welcoming environment where youth can freely express thoughts and feelings regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. A central goal of these activities is to create a sense of belonging: the young people learn that they are not alone and that they are part of a larger LGBT community, which, in turn, is an integral component of Israeli society. The social integration process creates a sense of empowerment, motivates social activism and develops young leadership.
IGY is operated by hundreds of professionals, including educators, therapists, counselors and consultants – the vast majority of which are volunteers. Together with the youth and their families, they work together as a team to provide regional and national programs and activities.
